Sequential modelling strategies in ML modelling
Hi all I have a large number of variables for potential inclusion in a 2-level model. If this were a single level model I would apply a sequential modelling strategy: identify a number of blocks of variables and enter each block in order of block priority. I'm not sure if or how the existence of the...

Re: Trying to import data with first row treated as column headings
Thanks Chris - I'm glad I was not missing something obvious anyway!

Trying to import data with first row treated as column headings
I am trying to import a large text file into MLwiN, but using both the Import and the ASCII Text File Input options, the data is imported with the column headings as the first row. My data files are very large in terms of number of variables (100 or so), and cases (3 million); and although Pasting d...

Re: Related variables at different levels
Yes, that is very helpful, Bill thank you very much. Apologies for the slow acknowledgement of your response: I have been offsite for a while.

Related variables at different levels
Hi all I have a 2-level model in which individuals (lower level 1) and nested within communities (higher level 2). The outcome measure is binary: whether or not an individual needs to access a particular social service. One of the level-1 variables I need to include is ethnicity. It is considered ve...

Re: Finite population correction
Thanks Bill. The papers I have read are a little inconsistent and/or vague on this matter, but on the whole seem to consider that correcting at both levels is appropriate. I'd be interested to hear from anyone who has faced the same issue or arrived at similar or different conclusions. Best wishes J...

Finite population correction
Hi all I am running a 2-level model with about 60 higher level units which have been randomly sampled from a population of about 150; thus about 40% of the entire population of higher level units is included in the sample. Each higher level unit (within and outwith the sample) is approximately the s...
